*** Installation ***

    1. Open tetris281.zip in WinZip or other similarly cool
       zip program.

    2. Click the Install button if using WinZip or other
Setup-conscious program; otherwise extract zip contents
       to a temporary directory.

    3. Run setup.exe from the extracted directory (done
       automatically in WinZip).

*** Requirements ***

WinTetris 2.81 is expected to run in Windows 95/98/2000 and
also hopefully in NT. Your current display settings must
be set to at least 256 colors when you run the program.

Also, it is recommended you install a recent version of
DirectX as not having DirectX will cause problems.

You need a joystick connected and set up in the Gaming
Options section of the Control Panel to get a joystick for
    your input device.

You need DirectSound and a MIDI Software Synth if you want
to play the music & sound effects.

In order to do Internet play, you must have a TCP/IP connection
    to the internet.

*** Notes ***

Please do not change your video resolution while WinTetris
is running--you should quit WinTetris first.

You should also quit WinTetris if you add a joystick while
    it's already running.

Also, don't do anything stupid like deleting the MIDI/soundfx
files after you've started running the game.

*** Internet Play ***

WinTetris now supports internet play! It works the same
way (I think) as in GameBoy Tetris, where you have to use
    two GameBoys and a link-cable. For every n > 1 lines you
complete, your opponent gets a gift in the form of n-1
lines of garbage at the bottom of their screen.

In order to play against someone, one person must Host and
the other must Connect to the host. If you are connecting,
you have to specify the IP address to connect to--so get
the IP address from your buddy (they can get it by opening
    the Host dialog).

Unfortunately, because WinTetris uses direct TCP connections
for internet play, two people who are both behind firewalls
cannot play against each other. Sorry. Maybe you
can get around this using proxy forwarding; WinTetris uses
port 5007. If you don't know what I'm talking about,
    forget it.

*** Control Settings ***

The default settings for WinTetris use fairly standard
keyboard controls--arrow keys for rotation, dropping
pieces, and placement. You can customize your controls
to whatever keys will register in windows, which for
some reason does not include a lot of basic keys,
but don't blame me--blame Microsoft. To customize
your keyboard settings, go to Controls / Keyboard...

You can also play WinTetris with your mouse! Just
go to Controls / Select Input / Mouse and you will
wonder in bewilderment why anyone would want to
play with a keyboard when they could use the mouse.
Pretty revolutionary huh? There are three mouse
styles you can choose from in Controls / Mouse...
and my personal favorite uses the mousewheel for
moving the pieces left and right.

Lastly, you can also play WinTetris with a joystick.
Make sure you have a joystick connected to your game
port, and registered with windows via the Control
Panel's Gaming Options, and WinTetris will use
your joystick automatically. If you add a new
joystick while WinTetris is already running, it
will not recognize that fact--so restart it to
    play with the joystick.

    - Fixed some chat-window issues (size, resize, buffer
      overflow)

*** New Features in 2.61 ***
    - Added InstallShield installer, which also creates
Program items and a shortcut to Desktop.
    - Changed Pause logic for Internet Play, so that either
side can pause the game at will.

*** New Features in 2.6 ***
    - Internet Play! Yess!
    - Fixed problem where you cannot play first MIDI track
    - Fixed rotation issues with the long block
    - Added Game Over text when you lose / Winner text if
      you win in multiplayer mode

*** New Features in 2.5 ***

    - Now with explosions!
    - I probably fixed some bugs (don't remember)

*** New Features in 2.4 ***

    - Now with sound effects!
    - Limited the extent of the AIM bug (I hope) to only cause
problems while the keyboard configuration is being changed.

*** New Features in 2.3.1 ***

    - Doesn't freeze on machines that don't support DirectMusic!
    - Tried to fix annoying AIM bug. Didn't work.
    - Fixed bug where you crash the program by: Selecting a song,
pausing the game, and selecting a different song.

*** New Features in 2.3 ***

    - Now supports MIDI music! Just select your song choice
from the Music Menu (the midi files themselves must be
in the same directory as your WinTetris executable
      for this to work)
    - Screen now flashes when you get a tetris

*** Features in 2.2 ***

    - Runs in any color depth of 256 colors or more seamlessly
    - Customizable keyboard controls
    - Mouse support and three mouse settings
    - Joystick support
    - High Scores List
    - Auto-pause pauses the game when you switch to another
application (can be useful if you use programs which
steal focus unnecessarily, such as AOL Instant Messenger).
    - Beautifully textured blocks (sure beats the ugly textures
      on Nintendo, for example)
    - Written by Hexar! [sic]

*** Known Bugs ***

    - On some machines (95/98/ME), if you are running WinTetris in the background,
and you type the letter 's' in an AOL Instant Messenger window to
a buddy, the s forces a newline and screws up your typing. This bug should
now be limited to only times when you are changing your keyboard config,
but I haven't tested it yet.
